This cave is set in strata of calcium and dolomites and belongs to the late Jurassic epoch. The cave was formed in two main periods. During the first stage which lasted approximately ninety to a hundred and twenty millions years, the land was under the sea.
And it was during a period of approximately ninety to a hundred and twenty million years during the early cretaceous when Lebanon rosea bove the sea surface for thirty million years during parts of the cave were subject to alteration and smelting.
Then water covered the earth again for about 40 millions years. the second stage was about 20 million years ago when the land rose above water again due to tectonic movements.it was then when the cave took shape.
The cave had 3 parts, the current cave, a second lower cave and a third lower cave at the bottom of the valley from where the zahlan fountain gushes out. Most of the stalactites and stalagmites were formed during the last thousand years.
How to reach Al Zahlan Grotto: You took the road to Dennieh from Tripoli or Zgharta, all the way to Sir el Dennieh, and then from Sir El Dennieh , you continue to Kattine village where the grotto is.
